When Mike Norvell arrived in Tallahassee before the 2020 season, he inherited a program hungry for a return to national relevance. The former Oregon assistant quickly turned the Seminoles into a contender, culminating in a 13‑1 record and an ACC championship in 2023 that earned him the National Coach of the Year award.
The following year, however, the momentum stalled. Florida State tumbled to a 2‑10 finish in 2024, the program’s worst campaign in decades, before a modest rebound to 5‑7 in 2025 that included a surprising victory over Alabama. The swings in performance have left the university’s athletic department at a crossroads.
A contract conundrum
Amid the uncertainty, media analyst Brooks Austin of the Film Guy Network warned that Norvell’s job security hinges on a dramatic turnaround. ‘Unless the Seminoles explode onto the scene, the only realistic outcome is a parting of ways,’ Austin said, underscoring the mounting pressure on the coaching staff.
The financial side of the decision adds another layer of complexity. Norvell’s contract includes a buyout equal to 85 % of the remaining balance, a figure that currently stands at roughly $53 million but could rise to $72.7 million if paid in full over the life of the deal through 2031. The athletic department must weigh the cost of termination against the potential upside of a fresh start.
For now, the Seminoles are banking on a revitalized recruiting pipeline and a revamped offensive scheme to restore the excitement that defined their 2023 peak. Whether that will be enough to satisfy the board, the fans, and the ever‑watchful media remains to be seen.
