Devin Burkes Returns to Kentucky Baseball
Devin Burkes, a two‑time Mr. Wildcat award winner and former standout for the University of Kentucky baseball team, is set to return to Lexington as a member of the Wildcats’ coaching staff, marking a full‑circle moment for a player who helped steer the program to its most successful stretch in recent memory.
During his playing career Burkes started 177 of 190 games, earned the nickname “The Happiest Man in College Baseball,” and helped the Wildcats capture a College World Series appearance and multiple regional championships, including a Super Regional in 2023.
Coach Nick Mingione praised Burkes as one of the most trusted players he ever coached, noting that the former shortstop’s leadership was the emotional engine behind the team’s first three consecutive regional appearances.
A native of Bradenton, Florida, Burkes finished his collegiate career among the program’s all‑time top ten in several key categories, including stolen bases, runs scored and sacrifice flies, cementing his place in Kentucky baseball lore.
His return is expected to bring a blend of on‑field experience and cultural energy that the Wildcats hope will translate into continued success on the national stage.
