Rob McDonald Takes the Helm of St. Scholastica Women’s Basketball

Former assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State brings new energy to the Saints as they aim to build on a breakthrough season.

A New Era for the Saints

The College of St. Scholastica has named Rob McDonald as its new women’s basketball coach, entrusting the program to a coach whose career has spanned several institutions and conferences. The move comes after the Saints posted a 16‑10 record in the 2025‑26 season, their first postseason appearance in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since joining the league.

McDonald arrives after four seasons as an assistant at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan, where he helped shape a competitive roster. His coaching journey also includes stints at Saint Leo University in Florida, Lincoln University of Missouri, and a foundational role at Eastern Florida State College, giving him a diverse background that the athletic department believes will translate into success in Duluth.

Athletic Director Jessica Cherry praised McDonald’s energy and commitment to student‑athlete development, noting that his vision aligns with the college’s goal of fostering growth both on and off the court. “Rob brings a fresh perspective and a deep dedication to building a program that competes at a high level while supporting the holistic development of our players,” Cherry said in the announcement.

Building on Recent Success

The Saints’ recent breakthrough was highlighted by a 16‑10 record and a historic postseason berth, marking a turning point for the program. McDonald is eager to build on that momentum, emphasizing player development and community engagement as he shapes the team’s culture in Duluth.

He will replace Jason Schmitz, who departed for an assistant coaching position at the Division I level. Schmitz’s tenure laid groundwork that McDonald hopes to expand, and the transition is being framed as a continuation rather than a disruption of the program’s upward trajectory.
