The University of Washington’s men’s basketball team entered the offseason with a sense of optimism that once defined its program, but that buzz has faded as the roster undergoes a major overhaul.
Coach Danny Sprinkle, who took the helm after a period of instability that saw six previous coaches dismissed, is now tasked with integrating a fresh slate of players while trying to steer the Huskies back toward the NCAA Tournament.
A Wave of Departures
The departure of standout big men Zoom Diallo and Franck Kepnang to Kentucky, along with the NBA draft declaration of top recruit Hannes Steinbach, has left a noticeable gap in the lineup. Guards JJ Mandaquit and Courtland Muldrew have also moved on, transferring to Arizona and Georgia Tech respectively.
New Faces and International Talent
Despite the losses, the program has attracted seven newcomers, drawing talent from schools such as Texas Tech, Davidson, Gonzaga and San Francisco, as well as prospects from Brazil and Australia. The mix includes both domestic transfers and international recruits, adding depth and diversity to the squad.
Coach Sprinkle has emphasized that the team still needs a couple more pieces to complete the roster, and the coaching staff is actively pursuing additional transfers before the season begins.
Looking Ahead
The Huskies hope that the blend of experienced returnees and fresh recruits will generate the momentum needed to climb the Big Ten rankings, where Coach Sprinkle was recently placed near the bottom in a coach survey. With a renewed focus on development and teamwork, the program aims to rewrite its recent narrative of professional‑suicide perception and restore its competitive edge.
