The Space Needle, Seattle’s most recognizable skyline silhouette, has been temporarily re‑imagined as a colossal soccer ball ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A Symbolic Makeover
The makeover is the result of a partnership between the Space Needle and SeattleFWC26, the local organizing committee for the tournament, and was brought to life by Long Painting Company, a firm celebrated for its work on complex Pacific Northwest landmarks.
Executors employed custom‑designed graphics and precision‑engineered scaffolding to apply the soccer‑ball motif to the needle’s distinctive roof, a process that demanded meticulous planning and specialized equipment.
Peter Tomozawa, Ron Sevart and Jonathon Holca were among the team members who coordinated the installation, ensuring that the visual transformation aligned with the city’s broader World Cup narrative.
A Global Celebration in Seattle
Seattle is slated to host six matches during the tournament and is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors, turning the city into a hub of international excitement. The giant soccer‑ball silhouette is poised to become one of the most recognizable images of the event, embodying the convergence of sport, art and community.
Beyond the visual impact, the project underscores Seattle’s commitment to showcasing its cultural vibrancy on a world stage, a sentiment echoed by local officials and the broader public.
