H-E-B partners with Spurs to expand youth basketball access
H-E-B, the Texas-based grocery chain, has announced a $500,000 contribution aimed at constructing new basketball courts in communities that lack adequate recreational facilities. The investment will be directed to San Antonio, Austin, Brownsville and Corpus Christi, cities where the need for safe, accessible play spaces is especially acute.
The funding forms part of the Spurs Play program, a community outreach effort administered by Spurs Give, the charitable arm of Spurs Sports & Entertainment. By partnering with the NBA franchise, H-E-B hopes to leverage the excitement surrounding the Spurs’ recent return to the NBA Finals to draw attention to youth sports development.
Winell Herron, senior vice president at H-E-B, said the company is eager to create more venues where children can stay active and learn the value of teamwork. Herron’s remarks were made at an event attended by Spurs legends Manu Ginobili and Bruce Bowen, who joined the retailer in highlighting the initiative’s goals.
In conjunction with the announcement, H-E-B distributed tickets to games one and two of the NBA Finals to select customers at stores throughout the San Antonio area, while also surprising shoppers with complimentary groceries and autographed Spurs jerseys. The promotional gestures underscored the retailer’s broader strategy of integrating community support with fan engagement.
While the company outlined the geographic scope of the project, it did not specify a construction timeline or provide detailed site selections. Additionally, H-E-B has not defined precisely what criteria qualify a community as ‘underserved,’ leaving those details to be clarified as the courts move from concept to groundbreaking.
