Helena Huskies Launch Annual Youth Soccer Camp
The Helena Huskies boys and girls soccer programs opened their doors this June for a week‑long youth soccer camp that has become a staple of the local sports calendar. Running from June 1 through June 5 at Helena High School, the camp drew roughly one hundred children, ranging from kindergarteners to teenagers preparing for middle‑school tryouts.
Head coach Kelly Koch emphasized the camp’s dual purpose: teaching fundamental skills while fostering a love for the game, and highlighted how the experience connects the community across generations.
The initiative traces back to former Huskies girls soccer coach Clif Naron, who designed the program to expand soccer’s reach in Helena.
Coaching as a Path to Growth
Divided into age‑specific sessions, each day blends drills, small‑sided games and full‑field scrimmages led by current Huskies players, who also serve as mentors.
During scrimmages the atmosphere shifts into lively banter, with counselors swapping quips and friendly challenges, creating moments that push participants out of their comfort zones.
Koch notes the visible progression of campers year after year, many of whom transition from youth leagues to varsity tryouts, underscoring the camp’s role in talent development.
Older campers take on coaching responsibilities, gaining leadership experience while reinforcing the camp’s culture of mentorship.
The blend of skill work, competition and humor not only sharpens technical abilities but also builds confidence, preparing the youngsters for the next step on the field.
