Sto-Rox Girls Flag Football Team Posts Strong Season, Eyes Future Growth

Star players Rae Johnston and Kamiyah Thompson lead a resilient squad that narrowly missed the WPIAL playoffs

A Season to Remember

The Sto-Rox High School girls flag football team concluded the season with a 9‑3‑1 record, a performance that placed them just a half‑game shy of the WPIAL playoffs.

At the heart of the squad are senior quarterback Rae Johnston and multisport standout Kamiyah Thompson, whose leadership and skill have drawn praise from coaches and teammates alike.

Coach Lauren Ferragonio highlighted both players as “talented and influential,” noting their ability to mentor younger teammates and set a standard for the program.

Thompson, who also excels in other sports, took the opportunity to thank her coaches for their guidance, while Johnston announced her commitment to continue her athletic and academic career at Point Park University, where she plans to major in criminal justice.

The team’s only defeats came at the hands of Seton LaSalle, Montour and Moon, all of which advanced deep into the inaugural WPIAL tournament, with Moon reaching the semifinals.

Leadership Off the Field

Viyhshaela Macon, a recent recipient of the Jerome Bettis Leadership award, was described by Ferragonio as “kind, inclusive and supportive,” qualities that have helped shape a positive team culture.

Macon’s mentorship extends beyond the field, as she regularly encourages peers and younger players, reinforcing the program’s emphasis on community impact.

Looking ahead, the roster will retain much of its core talent, with Macon expected to lead the team next season, while Johnston and Thompson head to their respective colleges, bringing fresh energy to their new programs.

The Sto-Rox girls flag football initiative continues to grow, supported by partners such as the Boys & Girls Club and local schools, and the district hopes to expand the sport’s reach across the region.
