Mark Carrier, remembered for his ferocious play as a defensive back, amassed 336 total tackles, 13 interceptions and 27 pass breakups during his USC tenure. His 1989 Thorpe Award win made him the first Trojan to claim the defensive back of the year honor, and he was later drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft. Carrier’s 2007 induction into the USC Athletics Hall of Fame further cements his legacy.
Bruce Matthews, a two‑time All‑Conference first‑team selection and 1982 Pac‑10 Morris Trophy winner, was recognized as a consensus All‑American during his collegiate years. Selected by the Tennessee Oilers — later the Titans — in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, Matthews went on to earn a place in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the USC Athletics Hall of Fame, the latter in 2005.
