Regional Champions Crowned
The Goodrich Martians girls varsity soccer team captured the Division 3 regional title with a 2-1 win over Almont on Tuesday night, a performance that underscored their depth and resilience.
Cate Abraham opened the scoring in the fourth minute, striking a free‑kick that curled past the Almont keeper. The early lead settled the Martians, but Almont answered before halftime when Lola Battaglia equalised, forcing the teams into the break level.
The decisive moment arrived in the 76th minute when Sydney Place found the net, sealing the victory and sending the crowd into celebration. The goal was the culmination of a tactical shift that head coach Mya Blevins hinted at during the week, as the Martians pressed forward with renewed intensity.
With the regional crown secured, Goodrich now turns its focus to the MHSAA State Semifinals, scheduled for June 10 at Howell High School. Awaiting them is a formidable Detroit Country Day squad, a team that has dominated the early part of the season and will test the Martians’ defensive organization.
Should the Martians prevail, they will advance to the Division 3 State Championship at Michigan State University’s DeMartin Soccer Complex on June 14, where the culmination of a season’s worth of work will be on full display.
