Texas Christian University announced this week that Thomas Eshelman has been appointed as its new pitching coach, a move that underscores the program’s commitment to deepening its baseball pedigree.
A Coach With Proven Track Record
Eshelman arrives after a distinguished stint with the Baltimore Orioles organization, where he most recently served as the upper‑level pitching coordinator, overseeing the development of several arms that have begun to make their mark in the minor leagues.
His baseball journey, however, stretches far beyond the front office. A former second‑round draft pick of the Houston Astros in 2015, Eshelman spent four seasons in the San Diego Padres system before making his Major League debut on July 1, 2019, and compiling a 5.77 earned‑run average across 31 appearances.
Prior to his professional career, Eshelman was a standout at Cal State Fullerton, where he set a program record with a 1.65 career ERA and earned three All‑American honors. He was recognized as the Big West Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year in 2013 and later named Pitcher of the Year in 2015, also reaching the semifinals for the Golden Spikes Award in both those seasons.
Reuniting With a Familiar Face
The hiring also marks a reunion with TCU head coach Kirk Saarloos, who first recruited Eshelman to play at Cal State Fullerton. Saarloos, now in his second year leading the Horned Frogs, highlighted the coach’s blend of playing experience and instructional acumen as a perfect fit for the staff.
Together, they hope to translate the discipline and success that Eshelman displayed as a player into a pitching staff that can compete at the highest levels of collegiate baseball. The move is being viewed as a strategic step toward maintaining TCU’s reputation as a powerhouse in the Big West Conference.
The addition of Eshelman comes as TCU prepares for the upcoming season, with fans and analysts alike watching closely to see how his expertise will shape the next generation of pitchers.
