The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team is entering a rebuilding phase after finishing the previous season with a 12-20 record. Coach Bart Lundy and his staff have moved quickly to reshape the roster, combining a handful of proven contributors with a fresh influx of talent that includes nine newcomers.
A Home-Based Recruiting Hub
Lundy's recruiting operation was centered in his own living room, where a makeshift war room became the nerve center for assembling the new squad. Athletic director Amanda Braun made regular visits to the home, helping to coordinate the influx of players and ensuring that the staff could evaluate prospects up close.
Two returning players will anchor the lineup: Danilo Jovanovich and Chandler Jackson. Jackson, who averaged 15.2 points and 4.7 rebounds over the final ten games of the previous season, brings a proven scoring threat, while Jovanovich adds experience and versatility. Both are expected to play pivotal roles as the team integrates new pieces.
The incoming class features a diverse mix of talent, including four Division I transfers and several local products. Nate Malosa, a 6-10, 235-pound forward from Columbia State Community College, joins the program after a standout junior college career. Braylon Walker, a senior who posted 14.9 points, 5.9 assists and 5.9 rebounds, also arrives with high expectations.
Additional newcomers include Isaiah Dorceus, who played the entire previous season despite a torn labrum in his shoulder, and John Lovelace Jr., who is recovering from a leg fracture. The roster also welcomes several other promising athletes such as Sekou Konneh, Esyah Pippa-White, Amare Hereford and SJ Young, each bringing distinct skills that could shape the team's dynamics.
Local Roots and Staff Additions
A notable theme among the 2026-27 roster is the strong connection to Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. Nine players have ties to the region, reinforcing the program's community focus. The coaching staff reflects this local emphasis as well, with Milwaukee Vincent product Jose Winston and Oak Creek alum Ben Walker joining as assistants. Julian Swartz is also slated to contribute as an assistant coach.
The blend of experienced returnees, impactful transfers and locally rooted talent positions UW-Milwaukee to compete more aggressively in the upcoming season. With one scholarship still available, the program remains active in the market, aiming to finalize a roster that can capitalize on its regional connections and the high potential identified by Coach Lundy.
