A Legacy in the Fast Lane
The NASCAR community mourns the loss of Kyle Busch, a two‑time champion whose career was cut short by complications from pneumonia that turned into sepsis on May 21. In the wake of his death, Richard Childress Racing announced that Austin Hill will take over the No. 33 Chevrolet for the remainder of the 2026 Cup Series schedule.
Childress, the team’s patriarch, spoke movingly about Busch’s impact, calling him one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history and noting that the No. 8 car — Busch’s longtime number — will be retired in his honor, with the possibility of his son Brexton Busch someday reclaiming it.
Hill’s New Chapter
Hill, 32, has been a part‑time presence in RCR’s Cup program over the past three seasons, earning two 27th‑place finishes in his first two starts. While his résumé is modest, his familiarity with the team and the Chevrolet platform made him the logical choice to step into the seat left vacant by Busch.
The No. 8 Legacy
The decision to rebrand the No. 8 car as the No. 33 reflects both a tribute and a strategic move to keep the iconic number alive within the organization. Should Brexton Busch wish to compete, the No. 8 will remain available, preserving a direct link to his father’s storied legacy.
Jesse Love, RCR’s other full‑time driver in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, will continue his role alongside Hill, providing the team with a stable second presence as the organization navigates this transitional period.
