UNC Basketball Eyes Oregon Guard Wei Lin to Strengthen Backcourt

The transfer portal addition aims to deepen depth behind Terrence Brown as the Tar Heels target NBA prospects

A Roster Packed with Potential

North Carolina’s basketball program is actively looking to the transfer portal to shore up its backcourt, and the latest name on the radar is Oregon guard Wei Lin.

Lin posted averages of 6.6 points and 1.7 assists per game last season, and he proved he can rise to the occasion when it mattered most, dropping a career‑high 23 points in an overtime loss to Rutgers on Jan. 5.

The Tar Heels’ 2025‑26 squad already boasts a mix of size and skill, featuring projected first‑round NBA Draft picks Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar, alongside a cadre of players who stand at least 6‑10. This blend of height and talent creates a unique environment where new arrivals must quickly earn a role.

Head coach Dana Altman, who is in his first year at UNC, has emphasized that the roster is being constructed primarily through portal additions and high‑school recruits, a strategy that mirrors the approach he used at Oregon.

Among the returning pieces are Chapel Hill native Jarin Stevenson, who will be entering his senior season, and international forward Alexandros Samodurov, both of whom add depth and experience. Transfer Terrence Brown, who averaged nearly 20 points per game after arriving from Utah, is expected to remain a focal point of the offense, while the team also welcomes Utah transfer Maximo Adams, Neoklis Avdalas, Sayon Keita, and Cade Bennerman as additional options.

The ultimate goal is to give Lin the space to operate behind Brown and backup guard Matt Able, ensuring the backcourt can sustain production throughout a demanding schedule.
