The Gilbert Tigers captured the Class 2A Iowa boys soccer championship on Saturday, edging Des Moines Christian 1-0 in a tightly contested final that hinged on a single strike in the 78th minute.
Zachary Schrader found the net with a precise shot that broke a deadlock, sealing a victory that underscored the team’s relentless pursuit of excellence. Head coach B.J. Jordison had declared the title a preseason objective, a promise that the Tigers have now fulfilled.
A Defensive Masterclass
The defensive unit, anchored by goalkeeper Tyler Jerkins, repelled a flurry of attacks in the second half, preserving the narrow lead. Although Des Moines Christian pressed hard in the closing stages, creating several clear chances, they were unable to convert, with standout freshman Jase Price among those who came close.
Gilbert’s triumph marks their third state title in four years, cementing their status as a perennial powerhouse in Class 2A. The win also highlights a promising future for Des Moines Christian, who will return a core of young talent, including Price, to build on this season’s experience.
