Tennessee’s women’s basketball team is set to travel to Blacksburg on December 3 to meet Virginia Tech as part of the SEC/ACC Women’s Basketball Challenge.
A New Era for the Lady Vols
The matchup marks the second day of the challenge, which will feature six games on Wednesday, December 2, and another six on Thursday, December 3, spread across the two conferences.
The Lady Vols enter the contest riding a strong recent history in the series, holding an 8‑4 edge over the Hokies, and they will be looking to extend that advantage after a narrow loss to Notre Dame earlier in November.
Coach Kim Caldwell, who recently completed her final stint at Marshall University, will lead an entirely new 15‑player roster composed of 13 transfers and two freshmen, a group that USA TODAY Sports has rated as the ninth‑best portal class nationally and the second‑best in the SEC.
Tennessee’s preseason ranking of No. 25 in the USA TODAY Sports ‘Way‑Too‑Early’ Top 25 reflects optimism despite the roster overhaul, while On3’s metrics place the Big Orange at No. 10 overall and fourth in the conference.
Virginia Tech, under the guidance of coach Kenny Brooks, who is in his final season before moving on, has won four of the past five meetings with the Lady Vols, including the last two, setting the stage for a competitive clash.
The game will be one of three away contests already announced for the 2026‑27 season, joining road trips to Coppin State on November 5 and to Bridgestone Arena in Nashville against Baylor on December 18.
