The Road to Odessa
The 2026 Texas UIL baseball playoffs have narrowed to a single El Paso representative, and that team is Americas High School. Known as the Trailblazers, they stand alone as the city’s last hope of advancing beyond the regional level.
Their next test arrives in the form of the Birdville Hawks, a program that has dispatched Granbury and Centennial in earlier rounds. The two squads will meet in the Class 5A, Division 1 regional semifinal, with games scheduled for May 14 and 15 at Odessa Permian High School.
Reaching this stage required the Trailblazers to defeat both El Paso High and Abilene High, a feat that underscores the depth of talent on the roster and the competitive spirit cultivated by the coaching staff.
Key Contributors
Offensively, senior Drew Gonzalez leads the lineup with 13 home runs and 52 RBIs, while Cortez De La Fuente adds 10 doubles and 50 driven‑in runs. Complementary bats from Jake Munoz, Liam Esquivel and Ruben Hernandez provide additional power and run production.
Coach’s Vision
Coach Jesse Munoz has repeatedly praised the team’s chemistry, noting that the players’ confidence and hard work have translated into a resilient mindset. He emphasizes discipline on the mound and the importance of executing game plans against a disciplined Birdville squad.
Looking Forward
With the regional semifinals on the horizon, the focus shifts to pitching matchups and defensive adjustments. The coaching staff is fine‑tuning strategies, hoping to capitalize on the experience of players like Liam Esquivel, who also contributes a 6‑3 record on the mound, and Ruben Hernandez, a late‑season returnee who is 4‑0 as a pitcher.
