The qualifying session for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway delivered drama from the first lap. Denny Hamlin, piloting the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, posted a blistering lap at 195.117 mph, edging out local favorite Carson Hocevar by just .018 seconds.
Pole Position’s Mixed Blessing
Despite a tire issue discovered during Saturday’s practice, Hamlin’s crew completed repairs and still managed to claim the pole. However, the necessary work relegates him to the rear of the grid for Sunday’s race, a setback that could reshape the competition.
Hocevar, although disappointed by the narrow miss, led the most laps in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event and remains upbeat about his race prospects. He will line up near the front, hoping to translate that momentum into a strong finish.
Toyota’s grip on the top spots was evident, with Hamlin’s teammates Ty Gibbs and Chase Briscoe joining him in the top five. Tyler Reddick, the current Cup Series leader, secured third position, underscoring the brand’s strong qualifying performance.
Ford, with a storied 44‑win history at Michigan, saw its best effort come from Chris Buescher, the 2023 winner, who qualified 14th. Meanwhile, Chase Elliott’s Chevrolet placed sixth, keeping the American manufacturers in contention.
Joey Logano, a three‑time Michigan pole winner, will start 18th after a modest qualifying run. His past successes from pole — 2013, 2016 and 2019 — highlight the rarity of pole‑to‑win conversions at this track.
