The Newport Harbor High baseball squad captured the CIF Southern California Regional Division II championship on Thursday, downing Bakersfield Christian 5‑1 in a tightly contested final that showcased both offensive firepower and pitching precision.
The victory marks the Sailors' second regional title, adding to their Division III crown earned in 2022, and caps a season that saw them finish 25‑10 overall while finishing second in the competitive Sunset League behind Huntington Beach, which also secured a regional championship in Division I.
A standout performance came from the pitching staff, which combined for 11 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a single run on four hits, a testament to disciplined execution and teamwork on the mound.
Pitching dominance
Starter Ryan Williams opened the game with three solid innings, setting the tone before Grant Horsley and Gavin Guy took over. Guy, who closed out the contest, fanned five batters in three shutout innings, underscoring a collective effort that kept Bakersfield Christian off balance.
Key offensive moments included a sacrifice fly by Cameron Hatfield that brought in the first run, an RBI single by Gavin Guy that pushed the lead to 3‑1, and a walk by Brooks Francis that loaded the bases and sparked another tally.
The final score was sealed when Henry Mann crossed home plate on Hatfield’s ground out, completing a 5‑1 victory that left the crowd cheering and cemented the Sailors' place among the region's elite.
What’s next for the Sailors
With the regional title secured, Newport Harbor now turns its focus to the state semifinals, where they will meet the champion of the Division I bracket, Huntington Beach, in a clash of coastal powerhouses that promises another thrilling chapter in the team’s storied season.
