A Busy Road Ahead for Texas Basketball
The Longhorns open December with a marquee road test at Louisville on Dec. 1, a game that headlines the SEC‑ACC Challenge and will be televised on the ESPN family of networks. The matchup adds another chapter to a series that Louisville leads 4‑2, with the first meeting dating back to 1961 and a recent 81‑80 victory in the semifinals of the Saatva Empire Classic.
Last season the team fell to Virginia 88‑69 in the same challenge, marking the third year of Texas participation in the event. Since then the roster has added a win over NC State on Dec. 4, 2024, and the program continues to fine‑tune its approach under head coach Sean Miller, who stresses the importance of a balanced schedule as conference play looms.
Beyond the Louisville contest, Texas will travel to Houston for a neutral‑site showdown against Miami and is still searching for an opponent to meet in San Antonio at the Frost Bank Center. The Longhorns are also slated to compete in the Rady Children's Invitational, sharing the bracket with Georgetown, Saint Mary's and UCLA, where two games will be played each day and the championship and third‑place contests will unfold on Nov. 27.
Preparation has included preseason scrimmages against Arizona State and SMU, plus an open scrimmage with St. John's, giving the squad a chance to experiment with lineups before the regular season begins. Miller has repeatedly highlighted the need for a diversified slate that tests the team in different environments, a philosophy that also guides recruiting and player development.
Key figures such as guard Max Abmas will look to anchor the offense, while Miller’s vision of balanced scheduling aims to position Texas for success when conference play finally arrives.
