A former elementary school basketball coach in Taipei, known only by the surname Chi, has been formally indicted on a range of sexual offenses that include the sexual assault of minors and the production of explicit images.
Legal Charges and Victim Count
Prosecutors allege that Chi violated the Child and Youth Sexual Exploitation Prevention Act, the Child and Juvenile Welfare and Rights Protection Act, and the Criminal Code. The indictment accuses him of targeting up to 53 victims, with more than 1,000 photographs and videos documenting the abuse.
Investigation Details and Evidence
According to the investigation, Chi created Instagram accounts under a female pseudonym in June and July of the previous year, masquerading as a woman to befriend underage girls. He allegedly persuaded the minors to send nude photographs and videos, which he then used to coerce sexual encounters. The case also includes accusations of secretly recording students in school restrooms and shower facilities using a mobile device.
Institutional Response
The Taipei Department of Education swiftly terminated Chi’s employment, imposed a lifetime ban from teaching, and levied a NT$21 million fine. Officials pledged to reinforce screening procedures, staff training, and reporting mechanisms to safeguard students and uphold their rights.
Chi remains in custody as the Shilin District Court has extended his detention, and the case has drawn widespread attention for its scale and the exploitation of online platforms to target children.
