The regional high school announced this week that two of its longtime assistant coaches have been elevated to head coach positions, signaling a shift in leadership for both the field hockey and football programs.
Revitalizing Tradition
Zeke Vought, a 1993 alumnus of the school and former player under longtime coach Donald Herman, will now guide the football team. In addition to his role as an education support professional, Vought has kept the weight room open for off‑season training and plans to bring in young alumni coaches, attend junior‑high practices, and expand flag football for elementary students. He also intends to weave community‑service projects into the roster, aiming to build character alongside athletic development.
Liane Dixon, a physical education teacher and former ice‑hockey and field‑hockey standout who played for Northeastern University after graduating in 2001, will take the helm of the field hockey program. Her experience as a player and coach at the school gives her a deep understanding of the sport and the student‑athlete experience.
Mark McCarthy, the school’s athletic director, expressed confidence that the new coaching duo will strengthen the fall schedule. He noted that having both coaches already on staff eases the transition and allows the school to field a complete set of fall coaches for the first time in several years.
While the Island Cup matchup against Nantucket was cancelled this season due to a shortage of players on the Vineyard side, administrators remain optimistic that the renewed focus on participation and community engagement will reverse the trend. The school hopes to see more students step onto the field and into service roles, continuing a tradition of excellence.
