Braden Birch, a 2013 Cornell University graduate and former Big Red defenseman, has been appointed assistant general manager of the New Jersey Devils.
During his collegiate career he appeared in 128 games for Cornell, contributing 21 points while honing a defensive mindset that would later translate into analytical work.
After turning professional, Birch spent a decade abroad, competing in Finland’s Liiga and the ECHL before returning to North America to focus on hockey operations.
His most recent role was ten seasons with the Florida Panthers, where he rose to director of hockey operations and salary‑cap management and helped the club capture back‑to‑back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025.
Now, under new Devils general manager Sunny Mehta, Birch will split his time between the NHL roster and the AHL’s Utica Comets, overseeing scouting, contract negotiations and cap strategy.
Mehta, who arrived in New Jersey after six seasons alongside Birch in Florida, highlighted the hire as the first front‑office addition to his rebuilding plan, citing Birch’s blend of analytical rigor and player‑development insight.
The move also signals a continued partnership with Cornell, as Birch’s former teammate Craig Brush ‘72, a Cornell alumnus and owner of the Florida Everblades, remains a visible link between the university and professional hockey.
A Strategic Addition to the Devils’ Management Team
Industry observers view the appointment as a calculated step to infuse the Devils’ front office with proven championship experience and a fresh perspective on roster construction.
The organization’s broader network, including ties to institutions such as Cornell University and the Utica Comets, positions Birch to leverage academic resources and developmental pathways for upcoming talent.
As the Devils look ahead to the next competitive window, Birch’s expertise in cap management and scouting could prove pivotal in shaping a sustainable, high‑impact roster.
