Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope has secured a commitment from Ryan Hampton, a five-star forward in the 2027 class who ranks No. 10 overall in the 247Sports Composite. The announcement came after a highly publicized recruitment that included visits to Nebraska, LSU, and SMU before the player settled on the Wildcats.
Hampton, the second-ranked small forward and the fourth-best player in Florida, has built his reputation on the Nike EYBL Circuit, where he has averaged more than 20 points per game for two different teams. He is also the younger brother of former NBA guard RJ Hampton, who now plays in the Chinese National Basketball League.
The recruitment process saw Pope and his staff extend an offer to Hampton on April 27, a date that marks the culmination of a courtship that involved programs such as Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kansas, Indiana, Villanova, Louisville, and Baylor. Each of those schools had pursued the prospect, but Kentucky’s pitch ultimately prevailed.
A Family Legacy in the Making
Hampton’s pledge not only bolsters Kentucky’s frontcourt depth but also adds a narrative thread that links the Wildcats to a family steeped in professional basketball. RJ Hampton’s NBA journey with the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat and Orlando Magic, followed by his overseas stint, provides a backdrop that could influence the younger Hampton’s development.
The addition of Ryan Hampton underscores Coach Pope’s ability to attract elite talent while weaving together personal and programmatic storylines that resonate beyond the hardwood.
