Chris Kellett Steps Down as Appleton North Coach to Prioritize Family

After guiding the program to new heights, the longtime mentor decides to focus on his children and teaching duties

Chris Kellett, who spent a decade at the helm of Appleton North’s boys basketball program, announced his resignation this week, saying the decision was driven by the need to balance coaching with the increasing demands of his family life.

During his tenure, Kellett transformed a program that had hovered around six wins per season into a consistent contender, culminating in a 24‑5 record and a shared Fox Valley Association title with Kaukauna. The team also advanced to the WIAA Division 1 state semifinals, where they faced Wisconsin Lutheran.

A Coach's Pride in the Program

Kellett expressed pride in the team's performance, especially the semifinal showdown against Wisconsin Lutheran, and highlighted the development of four players who reached the 1,000‑point milestone: Maximus Nelson, Will Sweeney, Grant Hardy and Nathan Ramus. He also noted the value of opening the gym for players to practice and refine their skills.

Beyond the wins, Kellett emphasized the growth of the program’s culture and reputation, recalling how the team’s identity shifted from modest expectations to a competitive force in the state.

The coach also revealed the personal strain of juggling his responsibilities as an elementary school teacher in the Hortonville Area School District with the rigorous schedules of his three children, Allison, Landon, Cam and Kennedy, who are all active in youth sports.

In a conversation with USA TODAY NETWORK‑Wisconsin, Kellett described the difficulty of maintaining the demanding coaching schedule while ensuring he could be present for his family, a factor that ultimately led to his resignation.

Although he remains uncertain about a potential return to coaching, Kellett said he will always enjoy the sport and the relationships forged throughout his career, leaving open the possibility of contributing to basketball in a different capacity.
