Denny Hamlin entered the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series event at Michigan International Speedway with a chance to rewrite history. Starting from the pole, he was penalized early, dropping him to the rear of the field, but the veteran driver fought his way back through the pack.
The race was dramatically altered when a multi‑car incident involving Christopher Bell and Chase Elliott brought out a red flag, forcing a pause for barrier repairs. After the restart with 38 laps remaining, Hamlin executed a daring three‑wide maneuver to claim the lead.
He then pulled away to claim victory by 11.110 seconds, the widest margin of his Cup career and the largest win at Michigan since June 1991. The triumph marked Hamlin’s third win of the season and his 63rd overall in the series.
The win was dedicated to Kyle Busch, the late teammate whose death in May sent shockwaves through the sport. Hamlin’s father had also perished in a house fire earlier that year, adding a personal layer to the tribute.
Erik Jones finished second, while Bubba Wallace secured a season‑best third place, underscoring the competitive depth of the field.
