A Defensive Boost for the Hawkeyes
The Iowa Hawkeyes made a notable move in their 2027 recruiting class on Sunday, securing a commitment from a standout safety whose visit to Iowa City left a lasting impression on the coaching staff.
Jonathan Harris, a 6‑foot‑2, 170‑pound safety from Oak Lawn, Illinois, stepped onto the campus on Friday and was offered a scholarship within hours of his arrival. The quick offer underscored the impact he made on the defensive staff.
Harris, who also holds offers from Missouri State, Sacramento State, Butler, Western Illinois and Chicago State, is ranked as the 38th‑best prospect in Illinois and the 109th safety nationally for the 2027 class according to 247Sports. The Hawkeyes currently have one other secondary pledge, three‑star safety Jake Thies, and are looking to add depth.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz, alongside defensive coordinator Phil Parker, have emphasized the need to fortify the secondary, and Harris fits the profile of a player who could make an immediate impact. His commitment signals a continued focus on building a strong defensive recruiting pipeline.
