A Familiar Path Returns to the Orange
Ethan Butler, a 6‑foot‑6 guard from Manhattan, has officially committed to the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team for the 2026‑27 season, becoming the eleventh new face on a roster that now totals fifteen scholarship players.
The commitment marks the fifth freshman to sign with coach Gerry McNamara, underscoring the program’s aggressive recruiting push in Upstate New York and its aim to blend youthful talent with experienced veterans.
Butler spent the previous season with Overtime Elite’s Diamond Doves, where he averaged 5.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 17 games, showcasing his versatility on both ends of the floor.
Before his Elite stint, he starred at Saint Francis Preparatory School in Queens, where his performances attracted interest from several programs, including Siena College, before he chose to head to Syracuse.
The Butler family’s connection to Syracuse adds a personal narrative to the recruit’s profile; Eric Butler, Ethan’s father, once wore an Orange jersey on the university’s men’s soccer team, linking two generations of Orange athletes.
A Roster Rebuilt for Depth and Diversity
Syracuse’s 15‑player roster will feature four returning players, five freshmen, six transfers and the new addition of Butler, creating a blend of experience, athleticism and familial legacy that the coaching staff hopes will translate into competitive depth.
With the commitment finalized, the Orange look to build on recent progress, aiming to translate the incoming talent into on‑court success as they prepare for the upcoming season.
