A Sudden Shift in the Great Danes’ Offensive Staff
University at Albany head football coach Tom Perkovich confirmed that offensive coordinator Mike Wiand will step down after a brief tenure, citing personal family reasons as the driving factor behind his departure.
Wiand, who came aboard in January 2024, will leave the program to attend to an urgent family matter, a decision the athletic department described as fully supported and commendable.
Perkovich will assume offensive play‑calling responsibilities for the upcoming 2026 season, taking direct control of the team’s strategic direction on that side of the ball.
The university has promised to provide updates on any additional changes to the offensive staff as the offseason progresses, keeping fans and players informed of the evolving structure.
Looking Ahead to 2026
While the sudden vacancy introduces a period of transition, Perkovich expressed confidence that the existing roster and coaching cadre can adapt quickly to the new offensive leadership.
The move underscores the program’s commitment to balancing professional ambitions with personal responsibilities, a stance that resonates with the broader culture of the university’s athletic department.
