IU Basketball to Field New‑Style Front Court for 2026‑27 Season

Aiden Sherrell and Samet Yigitoglu to start together, promising more versatility and a reduced reliance on three‑point shooting

Indiana University’s basketball program is preparing a significant overhaul of its front court for the upcoming 2026‑27 season, positioning Aiden Sherrell and Samet Yigitoglu to start together under the basket.

A New Front‑Court Identity

The coaching staff believes the new combination will bring a blend of size, athleticism and scoring versatility that could reshape the Hoosiers’ approach on both ends of the floor.

By pairing a forward who can stretch the floor with a big man capable of protecting the rim, the team hopes to diversify its offensive options and reduce its dependence on perimeter shooting that defined the previous campaign.

Sherrell entered last season with a 53.9 percent field‑goal percentage and added 76 blocked shots, while Yigitoglu shot 62.8 percent from the field and swatted away 43 opponents. Their combined efficiency suggests a potential uplift in interior scoring and defensive presence.

The added size in the paint is expected to allow the Hoosiers to apply more aggressive perimeter defense, forcing turnovers and altering opponents’ shot selection. Last year Indiana ranked 279th nationally in defensive turnover percentage, a statistic the staff hopes to improve.

If the projected chemistry translates into consistent performance, the new front court could make Indiana a more balanced threat, capable of attacking the rim, defending the post and stretching the game when needed.
