UConn Adds Mike Pegues to Coaching Staff, Completing Roster of Assistants

The new assistant brings extensive high‑major experience, DMV recruiting connections, and a reputation as a top big‑man developer.

The University of Connecticut announced the addition of Mike Pegues to its men’s basketball coaching staff, filling the vacancy left by Luke Murray, who departed for Boston College.

Pegues arrives after a distinguished run as a high‑major assistant at Xavier, Louisville and Butler, where he honed his reputation as a premier developer of big men and cultivated strong recruiting ties in the DMV corridor.

A Proven Developer of Front‑Court Talent

During his tenure at Louisville, Pegues served as interim head coach for the 2021‑22 season, posting a 7‑11 record while continuing to shape the program’s interior play.

His career also includes a stint as a professional player, a collegiate career at Delaware that culminated in a 1999 America East Player of the Year award, and five years of overseas experience, including a period with the Connecticut Pride.

Completing the staff, Justin McClelland has been named director of strength and conditioning, bringing his recent experience as Villanova’s strength coach to the Huskies’ program.
