Western Kentucky University's women's basketball program announced a significant staff overhaul ahead of the 2026‑27 campaign, naming Jon Plefka and C'eira Ricketts as new assistant coaches.
Plefka's Coaching Journey
Plefka arrives after a distinguished coaching trajectory that includes head positions at UMass Lowell and Stony Brook, as well as a tenure at Auburn University at Montgomery where he guided the team to a program‑best 20‑10 record. He also previously led Post University to a CACC championship game appearance and secured three North Division Regular Season Championships. A Texas Tech graduate who played under legendary coach Bob Knight, Plefka earned a cum laude degree in 2007, underscoring his blend of academic rigor and athletic expertise.
Ricketts' Playing Legacy
Ricketts' collegiate career at Arkansas established her as a defensive stalwart, topping the school's all‑time steals list while ranking among the top ten in assists, points and rebounds. Following her senior season she was selected in the WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury and subsequently played professionally in Austria's league, where she earned MVP honors for the Flying Foxes. She later contributed to the university as Director of Student‑Athlete Development, bringing a player‑first perspective to the program.
Alongside the assistants, graduate aides Mason Thornhill and Jamia Gatlin were also added to Collins' staff, expanding the support network charged with player development and scouting.
Collins' Vision for the Roster
Head coach Greg Collins highlighted the character and work ethic of the new hires, noting that both Plefka and Ricketts embody the commitment and trustworthiness he seeks in mentors. He emphasized that their combined experience will not only sharpen tactical preparation but also serve as an inspirational model for the current roster as the team aims to contend in the upcoming season.
