Iona Preparatory School’s athletic department reached a milestone this spring as the Gaels captured the CHSAA Baseball AA Championship, completing a two‑game sweep of archrival Archbishop Stepinac.
The championship game unfolded as a dramatic comeback, with Iona erasing an early deficit to post a 12‑7 victory that sealed the title.
A Culture of Sustained Success
Athletic Director Ryan Mahoney praised the team’s work ethic, preparation and resilience, noting that the triumph reflects a program built on more than just talent but on a relentless commitment to improvement.
Mahoney, who assumed the role in 2019, has overseen a period in which Iona’s athletic teams have repeatedly ranked at the top of their leagues, from football championships to this baseball crown.
Senior shortstop Julian Guzman was a central figure in the final, delivering three hits, two runs and an RBI while also anchoring the defense at shortstop.
Guzman, who has committed to play at the University of Maryland, exemplified the blend of athletic prowess and academic focus that the school promotes.
The victory follows the Gaels’ recent back‑to‑back CHSFL football titles, underscoring a broader pattern of excellence across sports.
Beyond the scoreboard, the program emphasizes fitness, academics and community service, reinforcing a culture that extends well beyond game days.
