Northern Illinois University has officially appointed Sean Smith as an assistant coach, bringing a proven track record of development and winning to the program.
A Coaching Journey
Smith spent three seasons at Wisconsin Lutheran College, guiding the Warriors to back‑to‑back league championships before moving on to South Dakota, where over two years he helped the Coyotes compile 35 victories and mentor five All‑Summit League selections.
Prior to that, he served as head coach at North Park University, a stint that culminated in the 2023 D3Hoops.com National Coach of the Year honor and a 24‑6 record that carried the team to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
His early coaching years included positions at Orange County High School and Kenosha Christian Life, while his playing career unfolded at Trinity International University, where he earned a four‑year letter and served three years as team captain.
Smith holds a degree in biblical studies from Trinity International and a master’s in sports management from Waldorf University, grounding his leadership approach in both faith and analytics.
Off the court, Smith and his wife Gabby are parents to four children, a detail that often informs his emphasis on family and mentorship.
