A new chapter for Riverview basketball
Marcus Thomas has been named the new head coach of the Riverview boys basketball program, bringing a blend of collegiate experience and deep local roots to the role.
Thomas, who previously guided teams at Mt. Aloysius, Chatham and Penn State Fayette, expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, citing his long‑standing ties to the Oakmont community and his desire to build on the program’s untapped potential.
In his first season, Thomas will navigate a reshaped Section 3‑2A that now includes six schools, among them longtime rivals such as Jeannette, Springdale and Eden Christian, each of which reached the PIAA playoffs in recent years.
Looking ahead
The coach emphasized that his priority is to develop the talent already on campus, including returning starters Rex Roberts and Owen Metz, who have also shone on the baseball diamond and track field.
Thomas praised Athletic Director Andre Carter, also the Riverview girls basketball coach, and the junior high staff for keeping players engaged during early summer league games, a factor he believes will smooth the transition into the fall.
Having coached in Uniontown, Franklin Regional, Norwin and Imani Christian, Thomas said he has been immersed in WPIAL basketball throughout his career and feels prepared for the challenges ahead.
The program’s recent near‑miss at the WPIAL playoffs in 2025, finishing 6‑15 overall and 4‑10 in section play, underscores both the need for renewal and the optimism Thomas brings to the bench.
With the support of the community, the school board and the broader Riverview network, Thomas aims to restore the Raiders to playoff contention and to foster a culture of sustained growth across all sports.
