Downtown San Jose is gearing up for a 39‑day celebration that will turn the city’s core into a massive World Cup fan zone, broadcasting every match of the tournament on giant screens.
A Citywide Celebration
The Soccer Celebration, organized in partnership by the San Jose Earthquakes, the City of San José, the San José Sports Authority and the Bay Area Host Committee, runs from June 11 through July 19. During that period all 104 World Cup matches will be shown live on a 500‑square‑foot flagship screen and several jumbo displays set up around San Pedro Square Market.
Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized that the festival will generate significant economic benefits for local hotels, restaurants and small businesses, while also creating lasting memories for residents.
Food, Fun and Family
San Pedro Square Market will roll out a World Cup‑themed menu, offering special dishes and drink promotions, including to‑go alcoholic beverages for adult fans. A dedicated Soccer Village will host youth zones, face painting, interactive games and appearances by the Earthquakes mascot, providing entertainment for families across the city.
San Jose Earthquakes President Jared Shawlee recalled how the 1994 World Cup sparked his own passion for soccer, underscoring the event’s role in inspiring the next generation of players and supporters.
Kickoff and Ongoing Action
The festivities kick off on June 11 with opening matches featuring Mexico versus South Africa and Korea Republic versus Czechia, setting the stage for weeks of excitement that will keep fans engaged throughout the tournament.
Beyond the screenings, the event is expected to draw thousands of visitors daily, boosting foot traffic for merchants and reinforcing San Jose’s reputation as a vibrant cultural hub during the global sporting spectacle.
