Hamlin's Michigan Triumph Honors Busch
Denny Hamlin crossed the finish line at Michigan International Speedway to claim his 62nd NASCAR Cup Series victory, a milestone that ties him with the late Kyle Busch for ninth place on the all‑time wins list.
The win came despite Hamlin beginning the race from the rear of the field after officials penalized him for unapproved modifications to his car. A flat tire during practice had forced the team into extensive repairs, dropping him further back before the green flag.
During his victory lap, Hamlin raised a custom black flag bearing the outline of a 1 and a white 8, a visual homage to Busch's tenure with Joe Gibbs Racing and his later move to Richard Childress Racing. Jonathon Howard of Athlon Sports called the moment "special and popular," noting the emotional resonance it held for fans.
The race also marked Hamlin's third win of the 2026 season, underscoring his resilience and the competitive depth of the series as it moves toward the playoffs.
Race officials completed a post‑event inspection that confirmed Hamlin as the official winner, with no further penalties issued.
