The University of Kentucky confirmed on Tuesday that Nic 'Happy' Smith, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman, was found dead in a campus residence hall. Local police have opened an investigation but have found no evidence of foul play.
Known on the roster as 'Big Happ', Smith was pursuing a degree in community leadership and development, a field he hoped to use to give back to his hometown. Teammates and peers recall his infectious laugh and the way he brightened locker rooms with his presence.
Coach Will Stein, who took over as head coach earlier this season, released a statement expressing deep sorrow. He highlighted Smith’s dedication on the defensive line, his work ethic in practice, and the lasting impression he made on younger players.
Beyond football, Smith was celebrated for his culinary experiments, often sharing homemade dishes with teammates during study sessions. His knack for turning simple ingredients into comforting meals earned him a reputation as the squad’s unofficial chef.
