A challenging slate awaits
The Big Ten Conference has unveiled its 2026‑27 women’s basketball slate, and Rutgers will host a lineup that includes Illinois, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, UCLA and USC. The announcement marks the full set of home opponents for the Scarlet Knights, who will open their season against a mix of traditional rivals and new challengers.
Last year the Scarlet Knights stumbled through conference play, securing just a single victory and finishing near the bottom of the league table. While the men’s basketball schedule will feature 20 conference games, the women’s circuit will contest 18, a distinction that underscores the growing emphasis on the women’s game within the league.
Adding to the narrative, Rutgers has installed Gary Redus II as its new head coach. Redus, who previously guided programs at the University of Texas–Pan American and Texas–Rio Grande Valley, brings a reputation for player development and an aggressive recruiting philosophy. He inherits a roster bolstered by transfers from Power Four schools, a move the administration believes will accelerate the team’s ascent.
The transfer portal has become a lifeline for many mid‑major programs, and Rutgers is no exception. The Scarlet Knights have secured commitments from several experienced players who have tasted NCAA tournament action, a factor that could reshape the team’s chemistry and on‑court confidence.
Beyond the Scarlet Knights, the Big Ten’s recent performance in the NCAA tournament was notable, with twelve teams earning bids last season. That depth signals a competitive environment where each conference matchup carries significant implications for postseason aspirations.
