Alabama’s football program has added a significant piece to its future roster with the verbal commitment of Tai Phillips, a 2027 running back from Irmo High School in Columbia, South Carolina.
Phillips, who ranks No. 856 nationally and No. 64 among running backs, chose the Crimson Tide over a slate of suitors that included Ohio State, Missouri, North Carolina, Florida State and several others.
The commitment marks the second running back addition in Alabama’s 2027 class, following four‑star Nigel Newkirk, and underscores the staff’s ability to attract top talent from the Southeast.
A Recruiting Journey
Phillips first received an offer from Alabama on June 21 of the previous year, a milestone that came after a series of impressive performances on the high school field.
A month later he made an unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa, soaking in the atmosphere that would later influence his decision.
He is now slated to take an official visit on June 12, a trip that will likely cement his place in the class.
Stats and Rankings
In the 2025 season Phillips rushed for 919 yards and 12 touchdowns on 116 carries, following a 2024 campaign that saw him gain 880 yards and score 11 touchdowns on just 86 attempts.
Those numbers helped him earn a four‑star rating from major recruiting services, placing him among the nation’s most coveted backs.
A Class Taking Shape
The Crimson Tide’s 2027 recruiting class is shaping up to be one of the most balanced in recent memory, with top prospects across positions pledging their allegiance.
Alongside Phillips and Newkirk, the class includes names such as Hayes Fawcett, Elijah Haven, Kenneth Simon II, Trent Seaborn, AJ Pauley, Stevan Thornton III, Oakley Keegan, Michael Nnabuife, Luke Cody, Daniel Hill, Kevin Riley, AK Dear, EJ Crowley, Trae’shawn Brown, Charles Scott Jr., Dustin Henry and others.
The breadth of talent indicates Alabama’s continued dominance in the SEC and national recruiting landscapes.
