Newark Memorial High School’s softball squad etched its name into the school’s record books this spring, capturing the Northern California Section Division IV championship with a commanding 12‑2 victory over Berean Christian. The Monarchs exploded for eight runs in the opening inning, a surge that set the tone for the rest of the contest and left their opponents scrambling to keep pace.
A historic milestone
The win marked the first time a Newark Memorial softball team has reached the pinnacle of the NCS Division IV tournament, a feat achieved after the school’s baseball team fell just one run short in its own championship showdown.
Moreau Catholic’s softball team also made a deep run, reaching the Division V championship before dropping a 5‑3 decision to Le Grand High School.
Ohlone College’s baseball program added another chapter to its own story by winning the 3C2A regional final, with Paul Wagner delivering the decisive run that sealed the victory.
The regional champions then traveled to Irvine to compete in the 3C2A Baseball State Championships, where they faced stiff competition before concluding a season that has been marked by both triumphs and close contests.
While the Ohlone baseball team ultimately fell in the state finals, the run produced by Wagner remains a memorable moment for the college’s fans and underscores the competitive spirit of community college athletics in the region.
The double‑header of achievements reflects a vibrant sports culture across Newark and surrounding communities, highlighting the dedication of student‑athletes, coaches, and supporters alike.
