A New Era for Liberty Patriots
Liberty High School in Baton Rouge has experienced a whirlwind of change since returning to full varsity competition in 2021, cycling through four head coaches before settling on Devyn Baker. The school's athletic department announced Baker's promotion from defensive coordinator and associate head coach, highlighting his deep roots in the program and his readiness to steer the Patriots through a challenging slate.
Baker's predecessor, Jimmy Zachery, departed to join the staff at Grambling State, a move confirmed by the university's official website grambling.edu. Zachery's exit follows a brief but impactful tenure that helped stabilize the program after a period of flux.
Before arriving at Liberty, Baker led Northeast High School to a 5‑6 record and a playoff berth in 2025, showcasing his ability to compete despite a modest win total. His earlier head‑coaching stints at False River Academy and Slaughter Community Charter further cemented his reputation as a developer of young talent.
Baker's non‑district schedule reads like a gauntlet, featuring matchups against Alexandria, Westgate, St. Amant, and Lafayette Renaissance. Each of these opponents brings a different style of play, forcing the Patriots to adapt quickly and test their depth early in the season.
Competing in one of Louisiana's toughest Class 5A districts adds another layer of difficulty. The district includes powerhouses in Baton Rouge, Opelousas, New Orleans, and other key cities, making every conference game a battle for seeding and morale.
The coaching staff surrounding Baker includes veteran assistants such as Mickey Joseph, Drey Trosclair, Korey Lindsey, Andy Boone, and Dave Masterson. Their combined experience is expected to provide the tactical nuance and player development needed to navigate the demanding schedule.
Despite the obstacles, Baker remains optimistic. He has spoken publicly about the bright future of Liberty football, emphasizing that the program's foundation is solid and that the team will grow stronger with each contest. Community members and alumni are rallying behind the new leadership, hoping the Patriots can turn the current challenges into a resurgence.
