Illinois lands three‑star tight end Cade Newman in 2027 class

The Iowa prospect brings size and blocking skill, but will face a crowded tight end room.

The University of Illinois announced Wednesday that it has secured a commitment from Cade Newman, a three‑star tight end out of Ankeny Centennial High School in Iowa, for the 2027 recruiting cycle. The 67th‑ranked tight end nationally and 14th in his home state, Newman chose the Fighting Illini over several other suitors.

A versatile prospect

Newman spent his high school career lining up at several positions, from offensive line to defensive end, before settling into a traditional tight end role. Coaches praised his size, strong hands and solid body control, traits that they believe will translate well to the physical demands of Big Ten play.

Coach Bret Bielema has a history of featuring tight ends in multiple formations, using them as both blockers and receivers. His scheme could give Newman early opportunities to contribute, especially as the Illini currently lack depth at the position.

Competition and opportunity

BJ Thurman, a top JUCO transfer, is expected to be the primary competition for playing time at tight end. While Thurman brings elite rankings, Newman’s versatility and readiness to adapt may allow him to carve out a niche sooner than many freshmen.
