The Louisiana State University at Alexandria campus is buzzing with the energy of young athletes as the university’s Women's Basketball program hosts its annual Perkins Elite Basketball Skill Camp. Running for four days, the camp welcomes participants from third grade through high school, offering a structured environment to sharpen core basketball abilities.
Campers rotate through stations that emphasize shooting mechanics, ball‑handling drills, and defensive positioning. In addition to skill work, the schedule includes controlled games that let participants apply what they have learned in a competitive yet supportive setting.
A Focus on Fundamentals
Head coach Billy Perkins, who leads the LSUA Women's Basketball team, says the camp’s primary goal is to instill solid fundamentals that many young players lack. "Seeing kids develop their shooting form or master a basic pass is incredibly rewarding," Perkins notes, adding that the experience also strengthens ties between the university and the local community.
Beyond technical skills, the camp aims to prepare participants for the transition to junior high and high school basketball. Position‑specific defense and teamwork concepts are woven into daily sessions, giving campers a clearer understanding of how to contribute on the court.
Registration remains open for walk‑ins until the camp’s final day on Thursday, allowing families who decide spontaneously to join the program. With a blend of instruction, practice, and game play, the Perkins Elite Camp continues to be a cornerstone of youth basketball development in Central Louisiana.
