Father McGivney High School Celebrates Historic Girls Soccer Championship

Coach Jason Turkington reflects on a perfect season and the community’s role in the victory

Father McGivney High School in Glen Carbon, Illinois, gathered students, families and local supporters for a ceremony that marked the school’s first Class 1A girls soccer state championship. The event celebrated a season that culminated in a 3‑0 victory over Pleasant Plains and capped a 24‑2‑3 record.

A Season Defined by Dominance

Coach Jason Turkington, who has spent 25 years guiding high school teams, said the accomplishment still feels surreal. "We worked all year to stay at the top of the MaxPreps Class 1A rankings, and the girls never stopped believing," he explained.

The team’s journey was punctuated by a seven‑match postseason in which they outscored opponents 39‑0. Keeper Peyton Ellis and the defensive line posted seven consecutive shutouts, while senior Natalie Beck reached the 100‑career‑goal milestone.

Principal Joe Lombardi and Father Jeffrey Goeckner VF addressed the crowd, emphasizing that teamwork and community support were the foundation of the success. "This title belongs to every player, coach, parent and fan who believed in the program," Lombardi said.

The ceremony also highlighted the school’s broader athletic legacy. The championship marks the third state title for Father McGivney, following a girls track and field crown in 2024, and it underscores the growing prominence of girls sports at the school.
