Jayme Kontuniemi, a 6‑foot‑4 guard originally from Finland, is set to transfer to Troy University for the 2026‑27 men’s basketball season, bringing a blend of European experience and relentless drive to the program.
Head coach Adam Howard, who previously mentored Kontuniemi at NC State, highlighted the player’s character and work ethic, noting that the guard’s reputation for responsibility and dedication made him an obvious fit for the Trojans’ vision.
A Transatlantic Leap
Kontuniemi’s basketball résumé reads like a rapid ascent through European circuits. He spent two seasons with Drive Academy Espoo U20 in the European Youth Basketball League U20, where his team posted a perfect 12‑0 record and captured the 2024‑25 EYBL U20 Championship.
During that championship run he helped the side maintain an unbeaten streak, showcasing his ability to contribute across the board with averages of 6.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game in the prior season.
His formative years also included stints with Drive Basketball Academy Black U19, Finnish U19 title winners, and appearances for Omnia Espoo BA U20 in the Swedish EYBL as well as Pantterit Helsinki in Finland’s top division.
Beyond club play, Kontuniemi represented Finland at the U18 level in 2023, further cementing his status as a rising talent on the international stage.
The move marks a strategic addition for Troy as it seeks to bolster its roster with a player who has already tasted high‑stakes competition abroad, adding depth and a global perspective to the squad.
