A Deal That Locks In the Future
The Minnesota Wild announced a six-year, $20 million agreement with forward Michael McCarron, a contract that will keep the power forward on the roster through the 2031-32 season. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $3.33 million, reflects the club’s confidence in the player’s ability to contribute both offensively and defensively.
McCarron arrived in Minnesota midway through the previous campaign after the Wild acquired him from the Nashville Predators in a trade that sent a conditional draft pick the other way. The move gave the Wild a physical presence on the ice, and the forward quickly became a staple in the lineup.
During his 20 regular-season games with the club, McCarron set new personal bests, recording 109 shots on goal, delivering 205 hits and blocking 77 shots. Those numbers not only marked career highs but also positioned him among the team’s most reliable contributors in the latter half of the season.
His impact was especially evident in the playoffs, where he tallied two goals and two assists while adding 27 hits and a team-leading 14 blocked shots over 11 games. He also won 54.5 percent of his faceoffs, underscoring his versatility in key situations.
Selected in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, McCarron had previously earned $900,000 on an expiring contract before the new deal. The extension not only rewards his breakout performance but also secures a player who has consistently demonstrated a willingness to engage in the physical aspects of the game.
General manager Bill Guerin praised the agreement as a “strategic investment” that aligns with the Wild’s long-term vision. By locking in McCarron through the next decade, the franchise aims to maintain a core that blends skill, toughness, and faceoff proficiency.
