When the final whistle blows on a crisp Saturday afternoon in Mississippi, the roar of the crowd is not just for a win but for a purpose that stretches beyond the gridiron. The Meridian Flyers, now in their second season, were founded by a group of parents who wanted to give homeschooled students a place to experience organized football, camaraderie and healthy competition.
At the helm of this effort is head coach Ryan Hanner, who also serves as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Newton. Hanner describes the team’s mission as one of developing Christian values alongside athletic skills, turning each practice into a ministry moment and each game into a testimony of teamwork and integrity.
Competing with Purpose
The Flyers compete in the Mid‑South Christian Athletic Association, a league that has recently added north and south divisions to accommodate growing interest. They play eight‑man football and are slated to face three MAIS schools this season, while also scheduling matches against traditional opponents such as East Central Community College’s home field.
Last year’s roster was a mix of newcomers and veterans; many players had never experienced organized football before joining the Flyers. Today the team fields 16 athletes from grades seven through twelve, with interest spilling over to seventh, eighth and ninth graders from surrounding counties who are eager to learn the game and the values it teaches.
Beyond the field, the Flyers rely on a volunteer coaching staff that invests countless hours in mentorship, conditioning and spiritual guidance. The program is open to any homeschooled student or to those whose schools do not field a football team, providing a rare opportunity for youth in the region to experience the structure and friendships that traditional high school athletics often provide.
Looking ahead, the organization aims to broaden its reach, attract families from neighboring counties and continue its pursuit of a conference championship while staying true to the Christian principles that founded the team.
