A Strategic Addition for the Vols
Christian Fermin, a 6‑foot‑10 senior forward from Virginia Commonwealth University, announced his commitment to the University of Tennessee on May 14, finalizing a frontcourt upgrade that has been a focal point of the program’s offseason strategy.
Standing at 6‑foot‑10 and weighing 225 pounds, Fermin brings a blend of size and experience that complements the Vols’ existing interior options. In the 2023‑24 season he started all 38 games for the Rams, averaging 4.6 points and 3.1 rebounds while also contributing defensively.
His collegiate journey includes three seasons at VCU, where he played alongside teammates such as Terrence Hill Jr., and a brief stint in the 2024‑25 campaign that was cut short by a personal matter after just four appearances.
Recruited as a three‑star prospect and the No. 5 player in Pennsylvania according to the 247Sports Composite, Fermin also held offers from power‑conference programs including Pittsburgh and Penn State before choosing Tennessee.
The Vols’ roster now boasts 14 of 15 scholarship spots filled, comprising seven transfer additions and four high‑school signees. Among the newcomers is top recruit Chris Washington Jr., whose arrival signals a continued emphasis on bolstering depth and talent across the board.
Alongside Fermin, the frontcourt will feature returning players DeWayne Brown, Miles Rubin and Braedan Lue, creating a versatile mix of size, skill and experience that head coach Ralph Scott hopes will translate into greater competitiveness in the upcoming season.
Beyond the individual signings, the commitment reflects a broader strategy at the University of Tennessee to leverage transfers and elite high‑school talent, a approach also evident in the recent additions from institutions such as Loyola University Chicago, Kennesaw State University, Wake Forest University, Belmont University, the University of California and the University of Notre Dame, all of which are part of the program’s expanding network.
