A New Chapter for SIUE Basketball
Ryan Hellenthal has been promoted to associate head coach at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, a move that underscores his deep roots and rising influence within the program.
Having joined the Cougars staff in 2022, Hellenthal quickly moved from director of player development to assistant coach, and now to associate head coach, a trajectory that reflects both his expertise and the trust placed in him by university leadership.
A Record of Growth
Over the past four seasons the team has compiled a 77‑55 record, captured an Ohio Valley Conference tournament title and earned its first appearance in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament in 2025, milestones that many attribute to Hellenthal’s recruiting acumen and player‑development philosophy.
His ability to identify talent and nurture relationships with prospective student‑athletes has helped shape a winning culture that resonates across the campus and the broader community.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming 2026‑27 season will mark Hellenthal’s 24th year in college basketball and his first as associate head coach, a milestone that aligns with the university’s ambition to sustain momentum in a competitive landscape.
In his remarks, Hellenthal expressed gratitude to Chancellor James Minor, Director of Athletics Andrew Gavin and Head Coach Brian Barone, noting that the support of these leaders has been instrumental in building a winning culture at SIUE.
Barone, who announced the promotion, highlighted Hellenthal’s contributions and looked forward to continued success together, emphasizing that the program’s trajectory points toward even greater achievements in the years ahead.
